This is an extra large abstract vase that has been hand built using the slab building technique. Slabs of clay are rolled out, measured and cut to size, then attached together with liquid clay slip as adhesive. The joins are scored so the slip attaches itself into these grooves and solidifies when dry, ensuring the joins are tight and strong. I combined this technique with my love of the Japanese art of Kurinuki, ‘To hollow/carve’. The desired effect is a rugged and steep mountainside. One of my aims is to allow the viewer to escape through sculptural ceramic landscapes.

I utilised a copper carbonate and chrome oxide wash glaze to provide this texture when fired. Shipped in a crate for safety. There are deep cracks in this clay and this was intentional to further add to the sculptural landscape of the piece. Due to the nature of this, it makes the piece ornamental only.

As with all my work, this is a unique one off piece and will not be repeated unless requested by commission.
